The economic vote and tenure in office
Conférence organisée par la Chaire de recherche du Canada en études électorales (CRCÉÉ)
Résumé:
In this paper I use data from 323 elections featuring 206 different incumbents across 29 countries. Relating economic performance of the incumbents to their electoral fortunes I find that voters are less responsive to economic performance across time . As such, more seasoned incumbents, incumbents with longer tenure, are not punished (rewarded) more for adverse (good) economic conditions They are punished less.
