Recognizing International Status: A Relational Approach

Marina Duque’s (Harvard University) research is motivated by a desire to understand how status hierarchies emerge among states. She investigates the foundations of international status by drawing from an interdisciplinary body of work. Whereas previous research focuses on the state level by considering status as a motivation, Duque treats status as relational—as something that can only be understood through interstate interactions. Empirically, this enables her to move beyond measuring status symbols to examine how status emerges using state-of-the-art network analysis.
